Today’s route

Saturday: I had to work on Saturday morning. Once finished, I had a 5-hour window until I had more chores at work and so I decided to spend this window by hiking Gjøna for the first time in 2024.

The Holane route (north side) has moved a little and I hadn’t checked out the new trailhead. So, that’s where we would be starting today.

It’s a steep climb – from sea level and 530 meters straight up.

But while steep, you also get to higher ground quickly – at least if you’re in a fairy good shape.

There was a thin layer of snow on the upper mountain. I assumed there was no snow at all on the south side. This is the first mountain > 500m that becomes snow-free every spring.

And then we were up. The rest of the route was now up to me to decide.

But first, treats for the dog and pictures for daddy.

There was no doubt that we would hike across Saursegga on our way back, but at the time I had no idea if we would be descending on the north or the south side. Time would show.

I ALWAYS enjoy hiking across Saursegga. This is – bar none – my favorite walk on Gurskøy island.

While hiking across Saursegga, I had made my mind up. We would be going to Haugshornet via Hanen, continue to Nørdbergsheida and descend via Sædalen.

This was terrain I knew quite well. This was my 19th visit to Gjøna, and I had been going the route via Haugshornet several times.

After passing Hanen, we reached Haugshornet and had a nice view towards Saursegga and Gjøna.

It was very tempting to go all the way to Storetua, but I probably didn’t have enough time until I had to be back on-line.

So went up to Nørdbergsheida.

It’s worth noting that the high point is on the south side of lake Klovvatnet, and it’s unmarked. The signpost on the north side of the lake is 3 meters lower.

But the views are equally good…

From Nørdbergsheida, we followed the path across Høgehornet and Vatthornet before we reached the road in Sædalen.

Rather than following the Sædalen road until its end in Gjerdsvika, we went over to the pipeline where we did our regular short-cut along the pipeline.

Down in Gjerdsvika, we followed the shore for a little while before we were forced back on the road.

1,5km later, we were back at the car, and I had plenty of time before I had to continue working. If I had included Storetua in the hike, I would be in a hurry by now. I decided to visit Storetua the following week instead.
