Sunday: With Anne in Oslo and me not being on-call duty at work, I was at liberty to do just about whatever I want. And around noon on Saturday I decided to take the (relatively) long drive from Gurskøya to Gjemnes.
My goal was a roundtrip hike across Åbakkfjellet, Storfjellet and Fosnahøgdin, with Åbakkan as the starting point.
It was still high temperatures and so I (on Karma’s behalf) treasured every source of water we came across…
We followed a road up to Åbakkan and kept an eye out for a forest path that would take us up the mountain…
It wasn’t difficult to find the forest path…
The forest ascent was OK, but …
…it was even nicer to get above the forest…
And in not too long – our first top (Åbakkfjellet) was in the bag!
I had a mental picture of how far away Storfjellet was. Reality was that it was slightly farther away than in my mental picture…
But the hike to Storfjellet was nice. Some routefinding was necessary (there were some cliffs) but I enjoyed being in something that felt like wilderness – compared to terrain I was used to hike in…
We were completely off-trail now and I just followed my gut feeling about where to go. After many years in the game, my gut feeling is quite OK…
And eventually, we reached the Storfjellet plateau.
Our 2nd top was officially in the bag!
We had a pretty good view towards Tingvollfjorden from here…
The 3rd top was Fosnahøgdin. It looked like a straightforward walk over there…
There were however more humps, bumps and meadows than I had assumed.
But we were making steady progress…
And then we were up!
Big joy! 3 out of 3 tops were in the bag and now it was just a matter of deciding on a descent route.
I decided to hike across Hammardsalshøgda on our way down. It wasn’t a top with a prominence of >= 100m, but it was a named top…
From there, it was just a matter of setting a course towards the north end of lake Langvatnet and follow a road towards the trailhead…
After returning to the car, I had to figure out where to hike the next day, and position ourselves strategically.
After scanning the map, I decided that I wanted to hike Eidshaugen and Skarven from lake Meisalvatnet – on the other side of the valley. So, I drove up the toll road to Meisalvatnet and parked at the general parking. The weather was OK, but with some fog.
Skarven looked like an easy climb, as long as we stayed away from the snow – which I reckoned was quite hard – now that the temperature was dropping like a bad stock.
I loved spending the night in the car again. It had been a while since last time. I had a cold beer, a warm meal and a good book – which is essentially all I need. A bit later, I fell sound asleep and didn’t wake up until the middle of the night – freezing like crazy. More about that in my next report…
