Reppanipa (944m), June 3 2024
Monday: When my workday (in Sogndal) ended, the weather was OK, but we were expecting rain. I looked for a hike that I hadn’t done in 2024 and that wouldn’t be too long – given the weather forecast.
I chose to hike Reppanipa from Rindabotn.
Nobody else was out hiking here today…
I like the “birch ridge” from the river and up to the lake area.
There was a little snow left, but nothing that I was forced to cross.
My primary goal was to reach the top before the rain. From that point, I would be OK with the rain. I don’t know. It’s a thing. I don’t like getting wet going UP, but I absolutely don’t mind when going DOWN.
We took the first possible ascent route (off-trail) left of the cliffs and were soon up on top of Reppanipa – just when the rain sat in!
It wasn’t just raining, it was windy too. It was almost unpleasant…
Still, I decided to go ahead with my usual roundtrip when I’m up here. And so, we followed the path down to lake Nipevatnet.
There was still ice on the lakes. Spring arrives late here…
I enjoy the crossing between lakes Nipevatnet and Rundavatnet. And – it wasn’t raining anymore…
To get some new tracks for my (extensive GPS map), we walked about in places I knew I hadn’t been before.
All in all, a good hike!

Storehaugfjellet (1172m), June 7 2024
Friday: I had to be working today, so Anne took our visitors – Meaghan and Corey to Fjærland to show them this beautiful place on earth.
After work, I decided to hike Storehaugfjellet – by my new favorite route – up along the power lines. I am quite sure it is the shortest and fastest route to the top.
As it was a hot day, I was a little nervous about Karma giving me “thumbs down” for this hike. But she seemed eager and lead on.
There is a vague path that isn’t difficult in the beginning. After a while, it’s more or less off-trail.
It’s always nice to rise above the forest.
I know this mountain quite well. This would be my 21st visit.
After a little while, we reached the summit plateau.
I didn’t particularly rush anything, but I hoped to reach to the top within the hour, and after 58 minutes and 710 vertical meters, we were on top of Storehaugfjellet.
It was good to be back!
On our way down, we enjoyed a long snowfield.
That was big fun!
To get some new tracks, I took a slightly different route down the forest. Once back home, I learned that Meaghan & Corey had a great time in Fjærland (with Anne) and that it seemed that the sauna + multiple dives into Fjærlandsfjorden might have been the highlight of the day.

Nuken (919m), June 9 2024
Sunday: Our visitors Meaghan & Corey were “good” after yesterday’s hike up Tuftebreen glacier and decided just be tourists today. Anne took them to Solvorn and from there, they took the ferry and visited the Urnes Stave Church. I took Karma on a hike from Åsen to Nuken.
It was a bit foggy on top and I didn’t assume the fog would lift, either.
But I’ve been up here more than 20 times, so I am quite familiar with the views. I could easily survive a day with fog…
I don’t think Karma cared much about the fog either. Her focus is more on ground level…
For the return to Åsen, I decided to get some new tracks and headed down towards lake Halsavatnet. Not that I haven’t been there before, but I probably never did this particular route down to the lake…
From the lake, we sat course for Uglåsen.
From Uglåsen, we took the path down to the tractor road, which eventually connected with the Åsen road. The 70 vertical meters up to the parking is always SO HEAVY…

“Heit” Sauna, Sogndal, June 9 2024
Sunday: Back in Sogndal, Meaghan & Corey had discovered that there wasn’t only one Sauna (Fjærland) in the region. Sogndal has one two and Meaghan booked tickets to all of us in the afternoon.
I’m not a Sauna guy. But I felt it was unpolite to turn down the invite and so we all went down to “Heit” by Barsnesfjorden.
Anne is definitely a Sauna person…
It didn’t take long before it was completely intolerable in there…
…and the solution to the problem was nearby.
But our visitors were loving this from top to bottom, and it was nice to see two young people from the other side of the world, enjoy themselves in Sogndal.
And me? I loved it too. It felt really good afterwards. Really good. This won’t be my last Sauna!
