Tuesday: Back home after the trip to Tingvollfjorden and after work, I decided to drive to Vanylven to hike Storebøra – which I try to visit once per year.
I drove up to the Brandalsvegen toll road from Sørbrandal and when I reached lake Brørevatnet, things were quite different from what I was used to.
There was very little water in the lake, so I assumed that a drawdown had taken place, probably because of dam repair.
We started out by following the path along the lake…
…but it was too tempting to follow the lakebed…

It was quite interesting to see terrain that had been under water for so long…
Satisfying the thirst was not a problem for Karma – so far…
But we had still a steep hillside to climb and there was no water to be found there…
The hillside never seemed to end. And there were flies too. Plenty of them…
Karma’s tongue was closing in on a personal record by the time we reached the top of Storebøra.
Lake Brørevatnet was a sad sight…
And so (for me personally) was the new road. I’m not going to rant about it, but I don’t like this road and it has ruined the backcountry feeling I’ve had up here. I really hope there’s more to it than cabin owners getting so old that they don’t want to be hiking to their cabins anymore.
We had to get off the mountain and move on, as the flies were almost intolerable. I decided to go for a roundtrip hike and aimed for Litlebøra.
The route to Litlebøra offered water!
I wanted Karma to properly cool down and the only way to get her into the water (beyond drinking) was to throw rocks. I could see Karma move entered “m u s t r e t r i e v e” mode and did one lap, without finding the rock (of course)
And then there was a piece of snow left. Karma made good use of it!
A little bit later, we were on top of Litlebøra – or Lisjebøra as the locals say.
Our next stop was Kvannskarhornet – a modest hump which would take us down to the road in Kleivaskaret.
A couple of mushrooms on a pile of crap made me think of Star Wars. I really don’t know why…
I had been to Kvannskarhornet previously, but Karma hadn’t. So, this would be a new top for her.
After passing Kvannskarhornet, we aimed for Kleivaskaret.
In Kleivaskaret, we found some kind of installation which looked like a lean-on shelter turned up to 22…
Being Tuesday afternoon, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised from seeing no one at all…
We were somewhat forced to follow the gravel road back to the main gravel road…
…but there was no way we would be following the main gravel road back to the trailhead!
The lakebed was interesting. I hadn’t seen anything like it since I visited Death Valley!
Eventually, we got back to the trailhead. I hope things look better when I return in 2025. But the gravel roads will still be there…
