Saturday: I spent the first 3 hours this morning working. Afterwards, I decided to go hiking. The goal for the day was Melshornet on the Ørsta/Volda border.
There are numerous routes to choose between and the question was which route would we follow today? In the end, I settled for Raudemyrvegen. That gives us various options for round-trip hikes. We didn’t start off along the Prestesætrevegen (leading to lake Dinglavatnet) but instead, followed a tractor road which eventually turned into a forest path.
A bit higher up, we crossed Prestesætrevegen and got on the path towards Vardehornet.
Karma was not in super-shape today. Maybe she hadn’t fully rested after yesterday’s hike to Haddalshornet. Maybe she needs the full 24 hours between hikes. It’s hard to say. But I knew that she would come through. Just not in the pace she usually has.
A (much) younger girl came rushing past us. My competitive side just wanted to catch up and leave her in the dust. But I didn’t want to rush Karma more than I already was. Besides, and let me be honest – it’s just dumb. But fun! Big fun!
Karma was dead slow all the way up to Vardehornet, but she didn’t show any signs of discomfort.
On Vardehornet, she got treats, which seemed to help.
Now, I picked up my cell phone and turned on the radio. Ongoing was the 50km cross-country race in the 2025 cross-country, Nordic combined and ski-jumping World Championship. Johannes Klæbo had already won 5 gold medals in 5 distances and the big question was – would he win all 6?
On our way up Melshornet, we met an elder woman who was talking to us. I couldn’t hear what she was saying, and I assumed she was bitching about Karma being off leash. Which means – alongside of me.
But no, she was interested in how the 50km was progressing and I gave her the latest status. Which wasn’t very informative, as it was 4 skiers competing for the gold medal. In the end, she decided to pick up her phone and listen for herself…
Once we started on the main ridge to the top, Mr. Klæbo secured the gold medal.
I’m not a huge sports fan, except when Norway is winning. We don’t win a lot, so I appreciate the few wins…
And all of a sudden, we were up!
The usual routine was applied. I tossed treats around, keeping Karma busy for a while I took my pictures.
Karma seemed more eager now. Maybe she had warmed up. Or maybe she knew (or thought) there would only be downhill from here on…
So, what next? I decided to descend via Grøthornet. The descent from Melshornet was a bit cumbersome, with soft snow and holes in the ground. It was nice to get on the solid ridge to Grøthornet.
At Grøthornet, we went off-trail, aiming for the meadow SW of Lomtjørna.
The weather wasn’t great, but the absence of wind and rain was really, really nice.
From Lomtjørna, we took the Kortemyra path.
After Kortemyra, we followed the Rasmusråsa path down to the waterworks.
From the waterworks, we followed a trail down to Panoramavegen that I hadn’t done before.
The plan was to follow Panoramavegen back to the Prestesætrevegen road, but when I noticed an old tractor road below Panoramavegen, I chose to follow it. I had not done this route before. Not sure why. This route took us down to Raudemyrvegen, 0,3km west of the trailhead.
Superb hike!
Trip statistics: 10,7km, 830 vertical meters, 2h:40m
