The route

Monday: After sunshine comes rain, and it was a tough transition from great walks the week before, to THIS miserable weather. But the rain is needed, so there are no complaints from my side…

I had no desire to go hiking and so I went to my local forest hill Rambjøra to rip some more roots. Fortunately, it didn’t rain a lot…

Thanks for your patience, Karma…

I can spend as many hours as I possibly can on this trail. The weed will still win…

A battle that seems impossible to win. At least while being alone with it…

On our way down from the top, the heavy rain really kicked in. We were wet to the bone (and then some) when we returned home…

Sukkertoppen (314m), July 11 2023

The route

Tuesday: Working day in Ålesund. After work, I wanted to check out the upgraded trail on Sukkertoppen. I decided to stop by my buddy (and former colleague) Olav, knowing he’s part of the team that is fixing the trail.

He was home (going on vacation the next day) and decided to come along. It was great to have a “guide” that could walk me through the details.

On the way to Sukkertoppen, with Olav

When I was hiking this top with Olav back in the 2000’s, this path was a pure disaster. This was certainly not the case any longer. It only goes to show that Norwegians master this skill too. We don’t need Sherpas for everything. Not a bad word spoken on any Sherpas, though – they have my utmost respect!

Karma got permission to walk outside the path…

With cruise ships regularly coming into Ålesund, this mountain gets more visits than ever before.

Approaching the summit

I wasn’t totally convinced about the metal stair, though. That didn’t – IMHO – fit into the landscape. And, I refused Karma to walk this – “clawbuster”…

Hmm…

It was good to be back on top, though. The trigonometric point had been removed since the last time I was here…

On top of Sukkertoppen

The views were great, like always. Thanks to Olav, for coming along!

Kongsvollen (683m), July 12 2023

The route

Wednesday: I have recently mentioned that I would be doing some more “research” on Kongsvollen, and today’s mission was to check out an interesting ledge below the summit. Was it possible to come from Ringstaddalen, hike this ledge and reach the top via “Bukketrappa” on the NE ridge?

The ledge that I wanted to check out

So, on this nice Wednesday afternoon, I drove to Ringstaddalen to find out.

Heading up from Ringstaddalen

By the time we arrived at lake Hundelaupsvatnet, Karma was running hot and had earned some quality time in the water

Take your time…

Then we headed for Kongsvollen

Kongsvollen ahead

It was a beautiful afternoon (at least where we were), and it was tempting to also visit Blåtind (697m) also. But, as the summer vacation was around the corner, I decided to save a little of the energy. I had a suspicion that it would be needed in the coming weeks…

Blåtind – the highest top on Hareidlandet island

I saw the rainbow, but never felt the rain. My kind of rainbow…

Hmm… Rainbow means rain. At least, generally speaking…

Then it was time to check out the ledge. It wasn’t actually what I would call a ledge, but more an “opportunity” in otherwise steep terrain…

We’re at the “ledge”

Karma would just have to wait for my signal.

She’s not really used to be left alone on a mountain…

Once I concluded that this ledge would take us safely to the northeast ridge, I called on Karma.

Karma is together with pops again…

And now we were at the foot of “Bukketrappa” (goat stairs). Big fun to come here via this route!

At “Bukketrappa”

I sincerely hoped the Ørsta/Volda rain showers would stay put over there…

Not looking good…

Well, we got to the top – still dry.

On top of Kongsvollen

On our way, hell broke loose. It was POURING down, in addition to a strong and chilly wind. I decided to seek shelter in the mountainside.

Oh, this is nasty…

The rain disappeared as fast as it came in and the rest of the hike was OK. I actually think we dried up on the way down…

The rain has passed
