Tuesday: This was one of those days where inspiration to go out was nowhere to be found. But the dog had be walked and so I chose to go into my local forest and look for new off-trail routes. I would surely regret them afterwards, but right now, the idea served as motivation.

First, we walked from home and up to Djupvikhaugen.

The dog got some easily earned treats up there…

The next was to research a new route from Djupvikhaugen to Huldrehornet. This route would be partly having to be developed and we would also use a portion of the new forest road below Huldrehornet.

Once I made up my mind about roughly where the new route would go, we continued up to Huldrehornet.

It was windy up there. Karma chose to duck…

It was a lot of weather going around and due to the wind, I was glad I didn’t have the energy to go to a higher top today.

From Huldrehornet, we went down to lake Stemmedalsvatnet and followed the service road to the beginning of the Lidafjellet route – where I would begin trail maintenance the very next day.

Lidafjellet will be a new “Stikk-Ut” route this year, and it’s overgrown in places. I have the work cut out for me…

We descended Myrvågskogen, which also was terribly overgrown. That will be my next maintenance project after Lidafjellet.

Wednesday: And so it was ON again! But hey, it was my fault. I was the one that wished the snow would go away. At least below 300m. I never saw the point with snow at sea level anyway.

The route to the top is 1,3km, with lots of slab sections. I reckoned this trail maintenance would be a walk in the park.

Here we go again...

But it wasn’t. It took time. I like being gracious with the width of the trail, hoping one can avoid ticks passing through.

This is the best outdoors activity when it’s raining. One gets so sweaty that one doesn’t notice the rain.

After finishing what seemed to be one of 3 sections in total, I left the brush cutter, and we headed up to the top. It was dark by now.

I went down happy about having gotten started, and tired. It’s just not about pointing the cutter towards the bush. I have to move it like a scythe lift the bush, cut it and move it in one sweep.

Thursday: Back again on Lidafjellet – to finish section 2 of 3.

The weather was great, but the wind was so strong. It was difficult to walk with the long brush cutter. But the upside was that whatever I cut, blew away.

Can’t please everyone. I met a guy who didn’t seem to be overwhelmingly impressed about the work going on. *He* didn’t need the maintenance, which I can understand when other people are not in your primary field of view.

When I suggested that others might appreciate this, he was pointing towards the bush I had been cutting and without saying it out loud – pointing out that this didn’t look nice. It was a fair point, and I told him that the plan always was to clean it up, but not while I was cutting.

With that, we parted. The wind was so strong that we didn’t hear each other well anyway.

When we got to the top, I checked my phone. I saw a meeting invite (at work) for 6:30pm. I had been asked if I could participate in a meeting with developers in the US (hence the time), but as I hadn’t seen any invites, I thought the meeting was off. But this meeting was quite a big deal, and I checked my phone – without my glasses on. It read 5:50pm. Or so I thought.

I had 40 minutes to get down from this mountain, drive home and get connected at work. I’d better run. It was awkward to run with the brush cutter!

When I got to the car, the time was 5:35pm, which was confusing. But then I realized that with glasses – the time would have been 5:15pm on top.

I got back home and had all the time in the world to prepare for the meeting. It was the first time ever I had a chance to talk to the senior development team in a US company whose solution we’ve been using since 2021 – and struggled with ever since then. It was a good meeting. Definitely worth running down the mountain for…

Thursday: I felt a little bad for the dog who only got a super-slow walk two days in a row, so before bedtime, we went for a walk across our local forest top – Rambjøra.

That made her very happy!

Friday: Back again on Lidafjellet – to finish section 3 of 3.

I was happy to complete the final section, but two trips remained. One with a rake and one with the “final cut”.

Today, we returned via lake Stemmedalsvatnet – opposed to the two previous days where we returned the way we came.

Saturday: Just to clarify – this is NOT another report about trail maintenance on Lidafjellet. Lidaveten is altogether a different mountain – one that we’ve had to give up on twice this year, due to deep snow. Today, we stood a real good chance of making it to the top.

Again, we started out from Berkneset. The lower part of the mountain was completely free of snow.

In the lower forest

In the forest, I met two women coming down from the lean-to (“Gapahuk”) in the forest and we had a nice talk. They weren’t really interested in the lean-to per se but were looking for places to put up an outdoor hammock.

There were spots with snow higher up, but when we reached the point we had to turn around the last time, it was completely free of snow.

Now that I knew that we would make it to the top, I could spend my energy on enjoying every step and the views.

Passing Tuva, we just had the final hill left. The snow would NOT be a problem on the upper mountain!

Upon descent, we took the trail down to Eideim.

Once we reached the forest road, we had two options: 1) follow it to the Gapahuk (lean-on shelter) and take the steep path down to Lidavegen or 2) follow the old tractor road down to Lidavegen.

We went with option 1) but then I noticed a path that went down the forest, passing a Gapahuk I didn’t know about and then down to the tractor road to Lidavegen. Covering new ground was a big bonus!

All the bush I cut must go away, otherwise it looks like a mess!

Eventually, we reached the top and for the rest of the hike down to lake Stemmedalsvatnet, the lopper would be the hero.
