Our hike across Rundebranden

Monday: In the afternoon, Anne went to Runde island to do “patrol” in Lundeura – where lots of people and photographers were gathered to study the beautiful puffins.

As she were to park just after the bridge and walk across the plateau, I figured I could do my own hike from Goksøyr, meet her in Lundeura and drive her back to her car.

It was a gorgeous afternoon and there were plenty of people (mostly tourists) on the trail.

Most of them would be following the direct route up to Kaldekloven, so we went via Raudtinden. Much less traffic.

Karma wasn’t very interested in following the stone steps and since I had to keep her on a leash (required by law between March and August) it became a bit cumbersome.

Near the top, we passed a flock of sheep. They didn’t mind us and Karma didn’t even look in their direction.

Howdy...

Tourists with dogs were occupying the top of Rundebranden and so our stay had to be brief.

It was OK, though. I’ve been here before. Many times…

Next, we sat course for Lundeura and Anne.

I could see lots of people there. I can easily understand why the presence of a Field Inspector is important.

A friend of mine once said “photographers with sharp elbows” when describing her visit to Lundeura. I know exactly what she means…

Anne had completed her tasks – being visible and talk to people – and we decided to head back down. I didn’t bother waiting for the puffins. I’ve seen them before

Tuesday: It was time to do some good again, and I drove to Djupvika with the brush cutter to work on the trail to Rjåhornet. It was a bit overgrown in the lower forest.

But first, we would visit the top.

The weather wasn’t as great as the day before, but as long it isn’t raining – I’m always happy!

In last week’s report, I stated that I was slightly bored with the local mountains, except Sollia. I would like to add that I’m always happy to hike Rjåhornet too!

Wednesday: The nice weather was back and I “treated” myself with another break from the trail maintenance. This afternoon, we would be hiking Helgehornet in Volda from Eideim. It’s been a while since we hiked that route.

This is not my favorite route, but the forest part is nice!

Instead of following the path up to the ridge (Tuva), we followed the vague path that is passing Vasshaugen. I have never followed this route to its end before, so that became the challenge for the day.

OK, let's try something new...

This route won’t be my favorite route, either…

Dang, this is boring!

As I had suspected, this route also led us to the ridge, but higher up.

It was a hot day and Karma was awfully thirsty. There wasn’t a lot of water on our way up and besides, I didn’t really fancy going back the same way. I allowed myself a couple of minutes to decide on what to do.

After enjoying the views for a few minutes, I had decided that we would descend to Eikreim, crossing a creek along the way. That also meant that we would have to be following the road for a good while back to Eideim, but that couldn’t be helped.

I think Karma smelled the creek 1km away, because she kept a fast pace!

Hey, wait up!
Hey, wait up!

After crossing the creek, Karma was no longer thirsty and the tractor road I thought would offer an easy descent was completely overgrown!

Ouch!
Ouch!

The only fun thing about this route that we came across a fox that was overlooking the Eikreim farm and didn’t see us until we were close by. Unfortunately, I had put my camera in the backpack then…

One down by the main road, the brutal reality was clear. We had 7km back to the car!

Oh, man...

And on top of that – 130 vertical meters UP to the car…

Friday: Another hot day, but still I wanted to give Blåtind – the highest top on Hareidlandet – a go. The plan was to get to lake Hundelaupsvatnet (476m) before Karma collapsed of thirst.

Like always, Karma wanted to go straight up (off-trail), as she saw a hare there, some ten years ago. But I was able to get her onto the trail.

We descended along the SW ridge into Klungsdalen, and the ridge used to be easier back in the days. That said, I normally used to hike UP this ridge, not down.

Saturday: I normally don’t spend weekend days doing trail work, but I already had some nice hikes this week and I really wanted to complete the work I had planned before the summer break.

First, I did some good work on the normal route to Huldrehornet.

We had to stop by the top, of course…

With the summer break coming up, I looked forward to a change in scenery. Not a bad word said about the local mountains, but I need variation.

Then I did some work on the route from Huldrehornet and down Myrvågskogen. Now, I had only one work session left before I would let the brush cutter rest for a month.

Down in Myrvågskogen, we were met by relatively new locals. They were very curious. Karma wasn’t very interested (which is a good thing)
