One of Sunnmøre’s very fine viewpoints…

Thursday: After somewhat miserable weather in the beginning of the week, this Thursday was stunning, and I simply HAD to visit Sylvkallen after work. A 1000 vertical meter push (1100m in total) is not what a typically do after work, but it would be all worth it today.
Just before 5pm, we headed out from the trailhead near Standaleidet.
Every time I hike here, I forget how terrible the path up to Nøvedalen valley is. It’s probably one of the worst paths in the Sunnmøre alps. But, here and there, we get a break from the mud…
It’s always nice to enter Nøvedalen. The terrible path was behind us, the terrain ahead easier – for a little while – and one can muster the necessary energy for the final 750 vertical meters…
Today, we seemed to be completely alone on the mountain. I met a woman with a dog by the mast, going down. But I didn’t think anyone was on the mountain now.
I didn’t expect that there would be water from 600m and up, so I had to make sure Karma was all “loaded up” before we started the final ascent. We did find more water at approx. 750m, which was nice, as Karma was really thirsty!
And then we got to work…
I’ve been here only 4 times before (on foot and on skis) but today was particularly hard. I guess the age takes its toll…
But the surroundings make it all worthwhile…
And finally, we reached the top. It took us a good 1h:50m, but this included a detour along the south ridge. It only took us 1h:33m last year. Hmmm…
Never mind. These views are worth hiking all day for…
It’s not just me getting old. Karma is turning 11 in September and she wasn’t running around in circles, either.
Did I mention the views?
This is a pretty good viewpoint. Skårasalen is better and my favorite viewpoint is Utolhornet. The latter is a LONG hike, though. But Skårasalen is absolutely doable…
It was time to head back down. Descending the upper part was a delight. Then the horror section awaited…
But once the hike was over, the muddy path was completely forgotten and the 1 hour+ drive back home felt like 10 minutes…
The entire hike took us 3h:21m, vs. 2h:44m last year. I’ve decided to blame it on the path. We’ll see how it goes next year…
Trip statistics: 9,8km, 1120 vertical meters, 3h:21m

Good views would be a bit of an understatement.
Thanks, John 😉 We’re blessed with “good views” in these parts…
