Tuesday: While the Easter break technically ended on Monday, and I was working from Sogndal, I wasn’t home yet. Which was an important distinction, as I was missing 2km of skiing from reaching my goal of skiing 150km during the Easter break. That gap would surely be mended on my way from Sogndal to Sunnmøre.
I stopped on Utvikfjellet to ski Skavegga. The choice of skis was difficult, but I ended up with regular mountain skis.
It didn’t take long before I regretted this choice, as the snow was quite hard. I would have to find a safe route up Skavegga. I hadn’t been up there since 2011 and didn’t really remember the terrain.
But all that was less important. Just being out skiing this afternoon was just wonderful.
When I got Skavegga in view, I quickly concluded that there was indeed a safe route to the top. “Safe” in this context means that there is no danger if I run into hard snow, lose the grip and start sliding.
The “valley” ahead of us was quite gentle…
We both had a mighty good time…
And the surrounding landscape… Holy moly!
Lots of good memories from the 2011 ski-trip to Snønipa came back…
The top got closer and closer.
First, we stopped where I thought the high point was.
Then, we moved over to the cairn.
Checking my GPS tracks afterwards, it was clear that we hadn’t been to the high point, which was 200m to the southeast. But from the cairn, it was by no means clear that there was a higher point. But OK, we visited the high point in 2011, so the top is “in the bag” for sure.
Now it was time to get back home.
My mountain skis are terrible when it comes to descent. They’re not really mountain skis, but a hybrid solution for mixing cross-country with off-track escapades. I can’t turn with them, so I have developed my own “survival style”. It brought me down from the mountain safely…
Down on the meadow, I was able to find a route where I could ski without any uphills. That was nice!
We were the only ones on this mountain this afternoon and we had a wonderful time. Back in the car, I had ~2 hours of driving before we were home. And maybe a little longer, counting in stopping for pictures…
At Grodås, it was clear that once we had passed through Kvivstunnelen, the great weather would be history.
But it was OK. We have had 3 days with nice weather and so I was ready for some grey days…
