Monday: This week started just like last week ended – with headache. But, not as bad as the day before and I was OK to drive from Sogndal to Rjukan (Telemark County) and Gaustablikk – where we had booked a room for 4 nights.
We stopped at Geilo for some shopping, then continued down Nore og Uvdal, and then took the road up to lake Sønstevatn – where had planned to hike Ræpeholberget (1370m). But, as this top was very close to Gloppehovda – which we hiked in 2017, we decided to hike Sedalsbrotet instead.
We followed the path up Urdelie.
The hike was easy. The slope was gentle and the path was OK. We enjoyed ourselves.
There are multiple tops surrounding lake Sønstevatnet. I look forward to visit more of them…
After a while, we left the path and sat course for Sedalsbrotet. The hike got more tedious, as the (reindeer) lichen drained the energy out of us.
But after a while, the summit came into view, and the ascent would soon be over.
It was nice to reach the top. It was the 20th new PF100 top this year. I gave up my annual goal of 100 new PF100 tops when Covid came, but I still try to get 50. Which I have been able to do since then.
This was the perfect hike on a travel day.
We took a more direct route on our way down, before joining the ascent route to avoid wet areas.
Our next stop: Gaustablikk and Gaustatoppen!
We continued towards Rjukan and checked into . We had ordered a “suite”, which we didn’t regret.
There was a TV in the bedroom and a TV in the living room, which was practical when only one of us wanted to see a World Cup soccer match…
Anne hadn’t been to Gaustatoppen yet, so the main goal for the next day was to get her up there.
I had been to Gaustatoppen back in 2001, carrying my dog “Troll” most of the way up. Returning after 25 years felt just fine. I was very much looking forward to the hike.
Meanwhile, we enjoyed the evening as much as we could. My headache got worse and it was clear that I could not be lying down in bed. So, I rigged some kind of chair in the bed, so I could sit, supported by pillows.
Anne considered getting up at 2am to watch the Norway – Senegal match. I was awake every hour during the night, also the 2am hour, but as much as I love watching Norway play soccer, there was no way I wanted to open my eyes to see the game. The headache was too overwhelming. Anne was just too tired.
Individually, we got the results from our cell phones somewhere between 4am and 6am and learned that Norway beat Senegal 3-2 and was qualified for the knockout rounds. A fantastic achievement!
Trip statistics: 6,9km, 300 vertical meters, 1h:55m
