My route up and down Marikleivhaugen
My route up and down Marikleivhaugen

Saturday: I had basically the whole day to myself, as long as I showed up for dinner at our basecamp in Hov, Søndre Land at 7pm.

I decided to bag a couple of new tops and started by driving from Hov to Jaren, from where I followed the Ålsbygda road up to the toll road that stretches- and forks into numerous road in the vast forest east of Randsfjorden and west of Hurdalssjøen.

My first hike would be Marikleivhaugen, somewhat picking up from where I left off (Framstadsæterfjellet and Kaperalen in 2023)

I parked at Sagvollen and followed a ski-route, but without the snow up the forest until the route got too wet.

I then went off-trail and just kept a steady course for the top. The terrain wasn’t particularly fun.

Locating the undisputable high point was hopeless. I just wandered around, taking one waypoint after the other, making sure I covered all possible humps.

Then I headed back down roughly the same way as I came up.

Saturday: After Marikleivhaugen, I had time for one more hike and I sat my eyes on Gullenhaugen. I talked to local guy, and he said I would not be able to drive all the roads I saw on my map. But just getting closer was a bonus.

When I got to the road fork south of V. Sjuputtane, the road towards Gullenhaugen was closed by a gate. Good thing then, to have a bike in the back of the car.

This area turned out to be a nature preserve. I am sure Anne would have enjoyed herself here, but she was busy visiting family in Hov.

After a while, biking got difficult.

I could have and should have brought a pair of lightweight skis that I had in the car. That way, I could have enjoyed 1,6km of skiing (in total), in addition to hiking and biking…

Walking between the snow and the bush was just very cumbersome. When I went off-trail in the forest, it didn’t get a whole lot more fun either…

But, a cliff near the top was quite surprising. I didn’t expect to find that here.

The high point was sort of obvious, if I looked at the 1m contours on the map. I didn’t have to walk around the upper forest to ensure I had been to the high point.

I took the same route back. I did have time for a 3rd top but I was actually a bit fed up by now and decided to return to the rest, with time to spare for dinner…
