Today's hike and bike route
Today’s hike and bike route

Monday: This afternoon, I decided to repeat a route I did with Anne and Karma back in April 2024 – a hike from Kvammen, across Ulsettua, Åsefjellet and Hjørungneshornet before returning to Kvammen on my bike, which I left at Hjørungneset.

In my head, this route was much, much shorter than in reality. If I had only bothered to look up my own trip report, I would have learned that the 2024 trip took 4 hours. Which was way more than I had planned to spend this afternoon.

But I quickly understood that this route was long and so I sat a good pace from the very beginning.

I enjoyed a good podcast and nice views along the way.

The route from Almekleiva and up the forest was quite overgrown. In a few years, this route won’t be fun any longer, unless someone steps up and starts clearing the bush.

In my head, the route from Kvammen, across Ulsettua and down to Engjaskaret should max. take 1 hour. Then I had allocated the next hour for crossing Åsefjellet and Hornet and 0,5 hour for the bike trip. 2,5 hours in total.  That was clearly impossible, but maybe I could do this trip in 3 hours?

When I got to the top of Ulsettua, Hjørungneshornet was still 5,7km away. Point to point. Along the path – 6,2km. Or 7.1km? That was the actual difference between the GPS app I was using in 2024, versus the one I was using today. In short – aggressive versus moderate point tracking. The reality was perhaps somewhere in the middle.

In any case, I kept a high pace across Ulsettua.

I was jogging down all downhills – a bit “hail Mary” at times, but I stayed on my feet.

I really looked forward to getting to Engjaskaret and see how much time it had taken.

Getting to Engjaskaret took 1h:21m, not 1 hour, like I had thought.

I kept on going in a good pace, still enjoying the snowy mountains across the fjord.

The forecast had mentioned rain around 6pm. The time was now 5:30pm and I hoped I didn’t have to bike all the way back to Kvammen in rain. So far, the weather was holding up.

Finally, I got to the top of Åsefjellet. Elapsed time was now 1h:37m.

I just kept on pushing and jogged from Åsefjellet to the start of the forest path to Hjørungneshornet. After a good pace up the forest, I reached the top 2h:11 after heading out.

I took one more picture, then continued jogging down to Hjørungneset where my bike was awaiting.

The problem with biking today, was that I had a really strong wind against, all the way. In the range 10-12 m/s. Not a whole lot, but brutal when you’re on a bike. I was so happy when the gusts passed, so I could get some easier meters until the next gust tried to push me off the road.

I had forgotten to bring the helmet, so I had to take it easy from Ulset and down to Holesanden. Even with a helmet, I would have taken it easy. The wind – now coming from the side – did its best to force me off the road.

Finally, I returned to the car – 3h:08m after heading out. Hell of a way to start the week…

Trip statistics: 10,1km on foot, 9,8km on bike, 900 vertical meters, 3h:08m
