Our route across Storevarden
Our route across Storevarden

Saturday: Today, I had planned to go to Sandsøya and hike across all the tops on that island. But, due to an unforeseen incident at work, I had to stay put in front of my PC until other people got started working on the issue. Then I was free to walk the dog.

I lost the window where the weather was somewhat OK. I understood already before leaving for Nerlandsøya to hike Storevarden that we might run into some nasty weather.

We started out from Kvalsund and in the beginning, the weather was quite OK.

I was planning on hiking to Storevarden, then to Rjåhornet and weather permitted – also visit Skagetåa. It would be the opposite direction of the usual round we do out here. Which, I knew was dumb given the wind direction. But going the opposite way could also lead to discovery of new paths – and that’s what happened today.

After a while, we were on our way up a ridge that wasn’t new to me, but which we haven’t done many times.

The weather deteriorated while we were heading upwards. At this point in time, I expected everything.

When we reached the top, the weather was not pleasant.

It wasn’t that bad, but it wasn’t good either. It was snowing and the wet snow was painful for the eyes.

“Snowing sideways” isn’t just a phrase…

Hiking towards the incoming snow wasn’t something I wanted to do and so I decided that we should descend to Kvalsvika via Nerlandshornet.

Then we sat course for Nerlandshornet.

This snowfall was just ridiculous. At least at this elevation…

Jeez...
Jeez…

This was only the second time we’ve hiked via Nerlandshornet. It’s a dead end path and that’s why we’ve not been there earlier…

Well, not totally dead end. On the map, it is. But there is actually a vague path that runs from Nerlandshornet to Vardemyrane, which joins the path down to Kvalsvika. This was the path we followed today.

Descending to Kvalsvika meant a really long walk along the main road, but so be it. How bad could it be?

When we got down to Kvalsvika, it had stopped snowing but now it was raining. I recently posted “rather snow than rain”, but today, it was the opposite.

I was legitimately wet, but maybe it would clearing up?

I was certain that it was just a matter of passing one bay (Kalddalsbukta). After having passed the bay, I realized there was one more bay (Andabøvika). Sigh!

Look at the upside! This will be over soon!

But eventually, we returned to Kvalsund and the car. I had planned to strip down and change into dry clothes, but someone had their face glued to their living room window and I didn’t want to give them the “pleasure”. I drove off, dripping wet and cold.

I stopped by Meny in Fosnavåg to buy something warm to eat. I grabbed a slice of pizza, and it was so nice to hold the warm plastic. I struggled paying – as my fingers could hardly move.

Still, all in all – a good hike!
