Baracán (1003m), Dec 18 2023
Monday: The planning for today’s mail goal didn’t take too long this morning. Anne and I had been looking at the same top – Baracán. The drive wasn’t that long, and the hike was fairly short.
Parking in Los Gigantes is pure currency. To avoid the most crazy situations downtown, we chose to park higher up in town. We would rather walk 10 minutes longer than having to deal with stuff like this…
To get to Baracán, we had to drive the scary road past Masca. The road itself isn’t that scary, it’s when you meet a bus or a truck that things can get challenging. Especially if there is a line of cars behind you. I had forgotten about this road, but once we were on it, memories from 2015 quickly came back.
Fortunately, there was little traffic this morning. We finished breakfast early and I guess the traffic would be quite different one hour later.
Eventually, Baracán came into view, and we looked forward to the hike!
We had the trailhead (Mirador Altos de Baracán) all to ourselves, opposed to when we came down and the tourists had found their way up the mountain.
I was gazing towards Roque de Masca, which was high on my to-do list, but it wouldn’t happen on this vacation, and most likely never. It is supposedly not easy to get up there…
I was more than happy about being on our way to Baracán. The path was nice and soon another top would be “in the bag” …
Looking at the map, we noticed that the path curves around the steepest part and we both felt for scrambling straight up the ridge.
I’m not really sure if this can be called scrambling. It was really, really easy…
…and fun!
They have beautiful ridges on the Canary Islands…
And then we stood on top of our 3rd new Tenerife peak this time around…
We could have continued westbound and explored the terrain there, but we decided to head back down and go for another top instead.
Unless there is fog or clouds, Pico del Teide is with you where you go hiking on this island…
We followed the path on our way down…
There is a hump on the ridge called Cumbre del Carrizal (864m) and we just had to go across it (of course)
Again, very, very easy scrambling…
…and fun!

Montaña de Tamaseche (1281m), Dec 18 2023
Monday: From TF-436, we drove down to Buenaviste del Norte to hike Montaña de Taco (691m). But the mountain service road was closed and locating a different route up felt like trespassing. So, we abandoned this top and decided to go for Montaña de Tamaseche instead. We drove to Las Cruces, where we found a curvy mountain road that took us up to TF-82.
Just before the mountain pass – from where you can hike to Cruz de Gala (at Las Barreras), we followed TF-373 eastbound to the Pino Loro roundabout. We parked here and followed a path that we hoped would lead us to the top. It didn’t.
We soon were in no man’s land, literally. Anne was not happy. I thought this was fun.
It looked bad, but it wasn’t so bad. We didn’t have to brute-force our way through the forest. There was always an opening ahead of us.
Entering the pine forest, the needles made it quite slippery. We could have gone skiing here!
After a relatively short hike up the forest, we reached the top.
We had a nice view towards Cruz de Gala and Pico Verde – which we visited in 2015.
We had nice views all around!
Pico del Teide was no exception.
We also had a good view down to Valle de Ariba, from where we would hike Montaña Bilma in a few days from now…
I found it amusing that there were no trees on top, but still the trees were higher than the top!
Then it was time to find our way down…
Eventually, we returned to the roundabout and our car, and we called it a day for hiking. 4 new tops in 2 days was totally acceptable. But only because this was our 2nd visit to this island and there wasn’t that many new tops left for us to do…
We figured we had earned another burger (with goat cheese) before returning to our hotel in Los Gigantes…
