Blåfjellet (1401m), Apr 22 2024
Monday: I wouldn’t say it was hard to concentrate at work, after the two nice ski-trips this weekend. But they were in the back of my mind and so I decided to ski Blåfjellet after work, as Anne was taking Karma along on a work trip.
The weather had been OK all day but when my working day ended, it got cloudy. The light would be flat, but I decided not to get disappointed about it. Interestingly enough, there were no cars at the Rindabotn trailhead! Normally, this is a very busy place…
The snow was solid so I could basically follow any route I wanted.
I decided to do a route I’ve not done before – directly towards the Storakupa valley (or bowl).
When I got to Storakupa, the plan was to cross the valley and ascend directly up to the high point. But the light was just too flat, and I decided to stay on the east side.
So far, the snow had been excellent, but when I rose above Kambafjellet, there were all sorts of snow. Slush, wind-packed and icy. I would have to be ready for everything upon my descent!
The only good light was somewhere in the horizon…
Like always, I went to the west top (1400m) first.
Then I went to the 1397m top, where the signpost says 1400m. As far as I have found out, both tops are 1397m, but the western top is slightly higher.
I skied down to Kambafjellet and then sat course directly for Rindabotn. It was a bumpy ride, but at least the snow got really good just above the forest, and I had some fun forest skiing. And – I got some new tracks for my Blåfjellet GPS map…
Trip statistics: 10,9km, 810 vertical meters, 2h:05m
Sætrehornet (853m), Apr 23 2024
Tuesday: I was on my way home from Sogndal and had to endure two convoys through the longest tunnels. When will this nightmare end?
I came to Olden just about the same time as Anne returned from a job trip in Oldedalen. It was a nice break for Karma, after 2 hours in the car.
The weather had been bad all the way and so I didn’t think I would be going on any hike this afternoon. But, as it wasn’t raining when we got to Grodås, I decided to give the walk a dog here. The typical place I walk the dog here, is up Ytrehornsnakken. But I’ve gotten a bit bored with that route and started looking for options on the other side of the road.
I found a tractor road and headed upwards. The goal was to turn around when I reached a named point.
Kyrkhjornsetra (30 min) seemed a little too short. Sætrehornet (2 hours) seemed way too long. I would just have to figure it out along the way…
It was very nice to be somewhere I hadn’t hiked before. This route goes all the way up to Gulkoppen (1306m) – which I’ve hiked from the Stryn side.
It didn’t take long before we reached Kyrkjhornssætra and as I had thought – it felt a little too short.
So, we moved up the forest without any particular plan.
Then we reached snow, and I understood what Sætrehornet was (a spur on the ridge to Gulkoppen) and where it was. It was getting late in the afternoon already, but I made the decision to reach that point and turn around.
The snow was a bit strenuous, but it sort of carried my weight.
Then it started to snow!
But I was determined to reach Sætrehornet, no matter what.
When we reached the Sætrehornet signpost, I knew that this was NOT Sætrehornet. Maybe on top of the hill above us?
On the hill above us, we found a weird marker. But was this Sætrehornet? I had to check the map.
No, it wasn’t. We were now looking for a place with a trig. Point. And I could see one a bit farther away.
Finally! The time was now 7:37pm, we had a long way down and then another hour of driving. Better get started…
I didn’t want to take the same route down and chose to follow the west ridge. There is supposed to be a path, but it was buried under snow.
Eventually, we got to Lønnssætra and then aimed for the tractor road we had been following upwards.

All in all, a very nice hike! The signpost says 2 hours to Sætrehornet (and this was a bit after the trailhead) and we were back before 2 hours had passed. We probably moved faster than the average hiker…
Once we had passed Kvivstunnelen, the weather got really nasty! And what do you know – there was even a convoy through the Rotset tunnel!

Huldrehornet (271m), Apr 24 2024
Wednesday: There would be trail maintenance on the Dyrkyrkja route this afternoon, but first – I had to walk the dog. The dog needs her walk and sitting watching me work the brush cutter isn’t walking.
I chose Huldrehornet for this afternoon’s walk and parked by lake Djupvikvatnet.
It was a jolly nice afternoon. It had been raining all day, so this was a welcomed break…
I enjoyed the view back home before moving on towards the top…
Jolly nice weather ahead too! At least, so I thought…
And then it started snowing!
That was a fun surprise! Blue sky and sunshine are so boring…
I wouldn’t go so far to say that winter returned…
There were a couple of rogue showers roaming around. I felt a little sorry for them…
We descended down the Myrvågskogen route – a path I’ve recently cleared.
Back at the car, I drove 0,9km and headed up the Dyrkyrkja trail. Now, Karma had to sit around and watch…
But this will be an excellent trail!

Melshornet (809m), Grøthornet (809m), Apr 25 2024
Thursday: I still cursed myself for not bringing the skis to Melshornet last week, but now I was back from Sogndal, and I was on my way to Melshornet with skis!
Like last time, we started out from Helgatun but this time I would follow the normal skiing route.
I tried to be clever and went into the forest to find the snow that the skiing route was missing and it was a terrible ordeal. But eventually, we reached proper snow.
The mountains from last week were still around…
It had been an absolutely wonderful day, and it was disappointing to see clouds move in. The light got much flatter and I imagined the descent would be no fun at all.
After a while, I was a bit worried about what was going on, up in the sky…
Eventually, we reached the top…
Just as a took a picture of Karma, I could see a snow shower moving in from our left. I didn’t see that one coming. Literally…
And for our descent, we got a snowstorm! I definitely didn’t see that one coming!
The only upside was that the light wasn’t all that flat, and I was able to ski quite fast. Of course, I had to wait for Karma to catch up every now and then…
I decided to follow the snowy road to the skiing centre. Mistake. I quickly ran out of snow. I left the skis at the skiing centre and picked them up after retrieving the car. A very interesting trip. Once back at the car, the weather was alright again!
Trip statistics: 9,3km, 620 vertical meters, 2h:05m

Sandvikhornet (352m), Dyrkyrkja, Apr 26 2027
Friday: Another round of trail maintenance on the Dyrkyrkja trail, but first – walking the dog. I chose to do so on Sandvikhornet on Gurskøy island…
We didn’t take the normal route to the top. Instead, we followed an old, overgrown route that was screaming for maintenance. Maybe in a few years, we’ll add this route to our trail network.
There is another path on the other side of the river – leading to Øyravatnet – which is in similar bad shape. Maybe this will be a path we’ll be adopting, too…
The weather was nice. I didn’t expect any surprising snow showers this afternoon…
That is, I would not have bet on it…
And then we reached the top of Sandvikhornet. The coastal view is pretty good from up here…
We took the normal route down from Sandvikhornet.
And then we drove back to Myvågneset and continued the trail maintenance on the Dyrkyrkja trail.

Storehornet / Bjørdalshornet (609m), Dyrkyrkja, Apr 28 2024
Sunday: I wasn’t exactly “spent” after the ski-trip to Sandfjellegga, and so I decided to go for a hike afterwards. Nothing too much, but not too little either. After checking the map, I decided to hike Storehornet (above Sylte) from lake Vikevatnet.
I had been to Storehornet before (in 2010) but I couldn’t remember where I hiked from. Probably somewhere down by the fjord. Definitely not from Vikevatnet. I knew that much.
And when I headed out from Vikevatnet, I was 100% sure that this route was completely new to me.
It was a nice route – easy to follow.
When we took on the final hill, I really wondered where I had been hiking this mountain from, back in 2010.
The top felt somewhat familiar, though…
And the views were very familiar…
I was really motivated to continue in the direction of Løvollsnipa and descend via Vedahornet. But that meant it would be later afternoon when I got back home. And so I ended up with going the same way down.
In the category “when I took this picture, I didn’t know that…”, I took this picture of Leikanger on Stadlandet. And I went there one week later – to finally do a hike from Indre Fure to Ytre Fure – plus some mountains while at it.
When I got back home, I checked my 2010 map. And sure enough, I had done this exact route back then!
I was ready to enjoy relaxing the rest of the evening, but something was missing. Ah – the trail maintenance part. I had been solely thinking about myself and the dog all day long. Better throw in some do-gooding for the community to make the day perfect. And so we headed up the Dyrkyrkja route – once again…
This time, I could see the “light in the tunnel”, meaning the top wasn’t that far away. I looked forward to leaving yet another route in pristine order…
