Our route across Storehornet

Sunday: So much for the headache “improvement”.  Headache all night and half of it was spent in a chair. When I was awake enough, I began self-massage and was close to human again around 8am.

The forecast said “cloudy the rest of the day” and so I decided to get away from my local region and drive to Vanylven. I hadn’t chosen a mountain top yet. That would be sorted out on the ferry between Årvika and Koparneset.

The only problem was the weather was completely miserable. It was raining a lot, and I couldn’t see any mountains due to low and thick fog. I almost turned around on Leikongeidet. But then I figured that it would probably feel more OK to have a rainy hike somewhere else, than doing a local, rainy hike. So, I continued.

When I got to Koparneset, the weather was improving!

On the ferry, I decided to hike Bjørnen from Kilebrekka. But when I got to Fiskå, there was blue sky above the mountains on the north side of Fiskå, and thick fog in the direction of Kilebrekka. Then I decided to hike Storehornet, which I hadn’t been to since 2020.

I drove up to a house near the tractor road going up the mountain, hoping I could get permission to park somewhere up there. But the guy wasn’t very helpful and so I drove down to Fiskå and parked there. Eventually, we were on the tractor road.

Karma wasn’t very enthusiastic, but tagged along…

The road went on and on and got steeper and steeper

Will this road ever end?

Finally, the road ended and we got get onto the mountain path. I was wondering if it would clear up or stay like this.

It was a bit tempting to go to Storebøra, and descend via the forest road there, but at the trail fork I decided to stick to Storehornet.

And up we went…

First, we arrived on Vardehornet – a small satellite top. At this point, I didn’t mind the fog at all. I found it altogether very beautiful.

Karma expected treats on Vardehornet, and I had to tell her she had to wait for it…

I know, kiddo. But this isn't our primary goal!

Then we either got a colorless rainbow, or the Pearly Gate appeared in front of us. Either way, it was awesome!

Is this really a rainbow?

When I looked over to Storebøra, I had a feeling it would clear up in minutes, but that never happened.

We arrived on the top of Storehornet in thick fog.

Now I had to decide where to go next. I had several options, but given the amount of daylight left, I chose to head down the southwest ridge – towards Nykelen.

We found blue sticks here and there. Which was nice, as the path was at best – quite vague!

It was nice to get below the thickest fog and get views again.

When we got to Strandanupen, I remembered the terrain from previous hikes up here.

It’s a little bit steep, although it doesn’t look steep on this picture. But we had no problems getting down here.

A bit later, we were down from the mountain…

… and had 2,1km back to the car – along the main road.

When I returned to Gurskøya, it was the same miserable weather. Hopefully, the island got a break from the rain while we were in Vanylven…
