Stedjeåsen (624m), Oct 28 2024
Monday: I was still in Sogndal and after work, I decided to do a hike across Stedjeåsen. Basically because I made my car available to Anne in case she was able to get hold of sacks with firewood. I could hike Stedjeåsen directly from her house.
After turning the clock back one hour, there isn’t a lot of daylight for afternoon hikes. And while the time was only 4:20pm, it was already pretty dark in the forest.
Every time there was an opening in the forest, it felt like the light came back on.
I was just hoping to get to the “viewpoint” before it got too dark to take pictures. We made it!
The viewpoint towards Sogndalsfjorden on the other side of the forest is better and now there is an even a bench there!
We made it to the top before the darkness. Well, I didn’t bother walking across the wet meadow, over to the true high point.
And then it was “lights out” and headlamp on.

Sogndal – Sunnmøre, Oct 29 2024
Tuesday: No hiking today. A busy working day and a 3,5-hour drive back to Sunnmøre took all the energy I had left. I stopped in Loen to stretch my legs, and I considered taking the dog for a walk here, but because of the rain I skipped it. The dog would get her walk in the familiar neighbourhood, when we got back home.
Rambjøra (132m), Oct 30 2024
Wednesday: As I was going to Ålesund for a dinner with colleagues in the afternoon, I devoted my lunch break to give Karma a walk up to Rambjøra.
It was rainy and windy, but it was OK to walk in this forest.
When we reached the top, I considered what to do next. If we went back the same way, we would be back before the 30-min lunch break was over. But I decided to do the regular roundtrip hike.
There was a problem at work that needed a solution. I decided to spend the rest of the hike focusing on it and by the time I was back at the house, I had a solution for the problem. Now it was just a matter of create a Visio drawing explaining it, and hand it over to those who needed the solution.
As such, I could – with a good conscience – log the extra 16 minutes as work!
Not even the MASSIVE rain shower we got took away my focus on the problem…
The trip to Ålesund in the afternoon – I don’t take the express boat too often these days, and the sea in Breidsundet took me by surprise. I actually thought the boat would flip over when a huge wave looked like it was 10 meters taller than the boat. There was of course no need to worry. It’s just been a while since I was on this boat in this kind of weather.
The dinner was at Nonna Lina in Ålesund. I didn’t know this restaurant, but the food was really nice!

Hasundhornet (533m), Oct 31 2024
Thursday: Karma woke me up around 1am and had to go outside to eat grass. Poor girl. She wouldn’t be out so long that it was worth getting the clothes on, but she would be out so long that it would be quite cold to stand in the doorway in underwear only.
It was raining of course, and 10 minutes later she came back in – a bit less restless. It took me a while to get back to sleep, and then the same thing happened around 4am. All in all, little sleep, but on a positive note – the headache I’ve had since August was maybe retracting?
In other parts of western Norway, the extreme weather “Jakob” was creating havoc. We were in the outskirts of this weather, and it was basically just raining – constantly.
I decided to take the dog for a walk up the gravel road to Hasundhornet. Like several times before, I had a distinct feeling that it was raining less right here.
This is a very popular trail, but we were completely alone.
One can understand that most people found it tempting to stay indoors this afternoon…

Høgåsen (240m), Nov 1 2024
Friday: It was a hail shower day. Which was fine while I was at work. But when I closed my laptop, I had to figure out where I could bring the dog in this kind of weather. Like several times before, I chose Høgåsen on Dimnøya island.
The weather was OK when we drove up to Hasundgot Stadion, and it was also OK when we started hiking. New since the last time we were here was a forest trail.
And then another hail shower came along…
When we reached the top of Høgåsen, the shower was about to move on.
Which was good, because it wasn’t tempting to continue a long hike in this weather.
On our way to Svarane (190,4m), it had cleared up completely.
The contrasts to the recent hail shower were huge…
When Stemnehornet (189,5m) came into view, I felt a hike across these 3 tops would be a bit too short, so I decided to go for the “Storerunden” (the big round) loop.
As we approached Uglesætra, the terrain was soaking wet.
Then, another hail shower came along. But it didn’t do much harm in the forest.
The wooden bridge didn’t serve the purpose of being a bridge today.
The next stop was Uglesætra, which I don’t even know how to begin to describe.
We followed the path from Uglesætra – and this is a route I’ve hiked several times – but somehow, we lost the path and spent a lot of time trying to figure out where to go. It wasn’t easy in the darkness. Vague paths here and there were confusing and led us nowhere. I was a little concerned that I would run out of headlamp battery, as I didn’t remember how long it was since it was recharged.
In the end, I had to use the GPS tracks to take us back to Uglesætra, but before we got that far, I found the path again.

Rjåhornet (600m), Nov 2 2024
Saturday: Last night, our friend Lise sent me a message about hiking Rjåhornet today. She invited me to come along if I was available.
I was, and I teamed up with her and her son Vinjar (10) in Djupvika. According to the forecast, we had a couple of hours before the expected snow (or rain)…
It was nice to see them again. We hadn’t met since our hike to Gjøna in April last year.
The weather was OK, but it looked windy on top.
As we started the climb up the mountainside, we ran into fresh snow. Dry, nice, hail snow. Vinjar had a good start but had to dig for inner motivation. He just wanted to get on with sliding down the mountain, which is difficult when going up. I trust he understood that the higher he got, the longer the slide.
For context – at the age of 10, Vinjar is closing in on 500 different mountains with a prominence >= 100m. That’s a decent start to a potential mountaineering career.
All rocks were icy, something to be mindful about – both upon ascent and descent.
So, how was the weather doing? Any showers in sight? Nah, not yet.
There was a cold wind > 500m. It went straight through the body. This was not a place you could stay too long, without shelter.
The others followed and we found a comfy spot in shelter of the wind.
But first, pictures…
Vinjar got to be the last person signing the register before I took a picture of it and send the picture to the “central register”. His handwriting was impeccable. Beautiful!
It was quite tempting to go on a longer hike, but not in this wind!
I asked if the others wanted a roundtrip hike, via Nakken, but they were good with returning the same way. Knowing Lise, she would be eager to get going for one more top before calling it a day.
