Skinnuten (1382m), Salhovde (1377m), Apr 15 2025
Tuesday: The vacation had gotten me. Even with decent 4G reception at the rented cabin in Jønndalen, I wouldn’t be motivated to log on to work today. I actually think I’ve deserved a few days off.
So, the plan for the day was to hike Skinnuten – the final mountain top with a prominence of 100m or more, within reasonable distance from the cabin.
I was no longer so curious about Karma. She looked completely dead 10 minutes before departure, but when we got our boots on, she was right there – coming along for the ride!
We started by Jønndalen Høyfjellseter and followed the SW path up the mountain.
The snow was hard, and walking was easy.
I had thought it would be steeper than it was. As I was hiking on trail running shoes, I had an ice-axe on the backpack, in case of potential challenges.
Eventually, we got our main goal in view. The distances were playing tricks with us. What seemed to be far away, wasn’t.
Having seen the mountains from a distance (from Kistenuten), it looked a bit scary if the snow was hard. The snow was indeed hard, but many challenges are solved just by getting closer to the problem.
It was absolutely no problem hiking this mountain on trail running shoes, today.
Then our goal was reached. Now what?
We just wanted to go on hiking, but I was determined that Karma should not get two long trips, two days in a row. So, we settled for returning via Salhovde.
Salhovde doesn’t have a prominence > 100m, but it would be bonus top.
It didn’t take us very long to over to- and up to Salhovde.
From Salhovde, we sat course towards our ascent route. The upper part of the descent was about trying to find my sunglasses, which got lost when my hood blew wide open. It would have helped if I had remembered that the sunglasses were sitting on the hood when it happened.
I didn’t find then. Oh well. 3 pairs of sunglasses lost in 3 months. One pair was expensive, the others weren’t.
Back in the forest, the snow was no longer hard. On the contrary, it was soft was butter. But, it was downhill, so…
Another nice hike in Jønndalen!

Geitåsen (681m), Apr 15 2025
Tuesday: After the hike to Skinnuten, I drove to Rødberg for shopping. It’s a 30-minute drive from the cabin. It’s not that we really needed anything, but I was out of beer, and I particularly enjoy my beer after the trips.
Once down there, I decided to grab the opportunity to hike Geitåsen. I got some advice from a local, drove up to Grønhaug and headed out from there.
I followed – sort of – a tractor road up to the ridge. It started easy enough. Little did I know what was awaiting.
When I got to the ridge, I got to total devastation. Not only seemed Dagmar to have been here (2011 hurricane), but her whole extended family too.
The forest was such a mess, and I didn’t find any way around it either. I just had to climb across it.
Eventually, I got up. What a delight…
I wondered if I should try my luck down the south side, but in the end I ended up returning the way I came.
But hey! A bonus top is a bonus top!
