Friday: After a bad night and day, I was looking at a beautiful afternoon after work. I decided to make the most of it and drove to Ørsta to hike Sandhornet.
I decided to head out from Kråkenakkveien. I really like the path up to Brekkesætra.
From Brekkesætra, we headed up the ridge to Grøthornet. Karma was looking for water everywhere. I asked her why she couldn’t just drink back home, where she always has water. She didn’t know.
This is just a phenomenal hike. Awesome neighbour tops, racked, packed and stacked!
It was still warm weather, but higher up there was a gentle breeze. Karma sensed it and let the breeze cool her down.
As if the surroundings weren’t already stunning enough, then the autumn colours and the light created pure magic, all around.
Then Karma found plenty of water on the ridge route and was good to go!
Now, we just had the final hill left to do. I looked forward to getting to the top.
As we closed in on the top, we met a woman and her dog. We let the dogs run in circles for a little while until we parted.
And then we arrived on the top!
I went a bit nutty with the camera…
This hike alone was worth all the sleepless nights and headache the past week. At least it felt like that, at the time…
So now what, return the same way?
I had to consider the sunset. The time was 5:30pm and I hadn’t brought a headlamp. It would start to get dark one hour from now. Which would not be a problem if we just returned the way we came. But that felt a little boring.
So, I decided to take the route to Brekkeheida – a route I’ve done a couple of times before. But then I’ve hiked down to the Sandhornet – Grøthornet saddle and gone off-trail from there.
This time, I decided to descend to the saddle between Sandhornet and point 816m, just to see if there really was a path going parallel to the high ridge.
At first, we were hiking off-trail, but then we stumbled upon a quite visible path.
I made an effort to follow it, and it didn’t seem to lead us down to Brekkeheida, as I thought it would.
Instead, it ran parallel to the high ridge, all the way, and we were able to follow it almost all the way back to Brekkesætra. In the end, I lost sight of it but then we were close to the Brekkeheida – Grøthornet path. We just would have to ascend a little to get onto the Brekkesætra route.
Then we met the woman and her dog again. She seemed a bit surprised to meet us again, on our way upwards. She was wondering if I was doing intervals up the mountain. It was tempting to say, “yeah, this is our fourth round going up”. But I didn’t.
Thanks to an overall good pace down from Sandhornet, we returned the car 6:24pm and it was getting pretty dark by the time was passed Ørsta. The knee felt sore and painful in the evening, but it was all worth it!
Trip statistics: 8,8km, 800 vertical meters, 2h:11m
