Kleppeåsen (151m), Heida (239m), Feb 28 2025
Friday: After work, it was raining and I totally lacked inspiration to go hiking. The only thing that got me across the doorstep was the ambition to get 500 vertical meters per day in average.
Anyway, I decided to do a round-trip hike across Kleppeåsen and Heida. I’ve done this hike a couple of times before, but in the opposite direction. This time, we started out by hiking Kleppeåsen first.
The ground was totally saturated with water. It hadn’t rained a lot for weeks, but due to higher temperatures, the ground frost was now melting.
When we got to the top, Karma instinctively knew this was a top, even if there wasn’t a cairn. And expected to get paid. She must have remembered that she had received treats here before.
Part of my drive for this hike was to get some new tracks for my all-time GPS map, and we took an off-trail route down from Kleppeåsen which was no fun at all.
The plan was to continue to Jøsok and hike a path from there, but few of my plans are ever executed. Instead, I made a dumb decision to go off-trail from Kleppe. The infield looked so inviting.
But once past the infield, the terrain was far from inviting. The first thing we ran into was a cliff where the dog had to climb while I was shoving her upwards.
Then, it was just like walking in water until we got on the path from Jøsokbakken. Finally, we reached the top and could look forward to a forest path and a gravel road from here on.
The rain never stopped, but it wasn’t raining heavily either. At least, that counts for something.
I looked forward to getting back home. The dog got its walk and seemed happy enough…

Rjåhornet (600m), Mar 1 2025
Saturday: Busy days at work, and my software development started at 7am. The new solution was nicely coming together. After noon, it had stopped raining and I saw an opportunity to hike Rjåhornet, this time from Stemmedalen.
There was a little snow on top of the mountain, nothing to worry about.
This route has a steep section, but Karma has always handled herself here. Nowadays, she’s not able to jump as high as she used to, and I had to give her a helping hand.
2/3 on our way up the mountain, the weather was still holding up. Big bonus!
Now we just had the “victory lap” ahead of us.
I’ve been claiming all winter that winter arrives in March. There’s something “going on”, but how it ends, we’ll just have to wait and see…
Our stay on top didn’t last long. Anne was on her way and if we hurried, we could be down in Djupvika by the time she arrived from Sogndal. Hence, she could pick us up and drive us back to Stemmedalen. I didn’t really feel for doing the steep Stemmedalen route with Karma again.
But then I realized that she wanted to see the 20Km cross-country skiing in the World Championship (in Trondheim) on the TV and I decided not to call her. This meant we would have to walk back home and I would take the bike and pick up the car.
Suddenly, we had blue sky. Just fantastic.
I arrived back home just as Johannes Klæbo won the gold medal. I must admit that I was watching the skiing on my phone, going down the mountain.
Afterwards, Anne wanted to take a hike across Huldrehornet. I had no need to continue hiking and she was on her own for this hike. Halfway through her hike, it started to pour down. And in the evening, the weather was just terrible. And the forecast for Sunday wasn’t good either.
Trip statistics: 7,9km on foot, 3,5km on bike, 700 vertical meters, 2h:12m
“Eventyrskogen”, Store Nausen (145m), Mar 2 2025
Sunday: The weather was awful (rain and wind) and I didn’t feel for hiking at all. But I was lacking 30 vertical meters to reach an average of 500 meters per day, and so we just had to get out. I had been saving “Eventyrstien” (The Adventure trail) in Gurskebotn for a rainy day, and I figured this was the day.
I didn’t tell Anne where we were going, and she was very curious when we parked outside the Gursken church. When she noticed the signpost, she was very happy. This didn’t look very strenuous…
The adventure trail is primarily for the young children…
…but that doesn’t mean that grown-ups can’t have fun too…
The plan was just to do the 1km route and that’s it. Then there is me and my plans…
The path was just missing the top of a forest hill and Anne understood that we had to go off-trail to get to the top of this very, very insignificant forest hill.
Now that we were off-trail, we might as well continue that way until we rejoined the trail.
When we got to the point where the trail was going back to Gurskebotn (this is a round trip) we noticed that the path continued up the forest to “Store Nausen”.
We decided to follow the path to the top. A whopping 145m above the Gursken fjord.
Now what? Returning the same way sounded boring. I told Anne that there was a path at the foot of the mountain above us, that would take us back down. And so we went that way.
When we didn’t find any path, I looked at the map and realized that I was very wrong. The path I was thinking about was further east – starting at Sætre.
So, we just continued off-trail, hoping to end up on the adventure path again.
Eventually, we found a path that could have taken us down to the church, but we really wanted to see the rest of the adventure trail. So, we stayed in the birch forest.
We then found a totally OK path along a stone fence. We quickly understood that we could follow this path back to where we went up to Store Nausen.
Back on the adventure trail, we enjoyed the many experiences that this trail has to offer.
Karma was not exuberant today but got very interested when I tossed some treats under a big rock.
We enjoyed this path. It resembled in many ways Uglesætra on Dimnøya island.
It was time to get back home and watch Therese Johaug in her comeback in the cross-country World Championship in Trondheim.
On our way home, we stopped at Gjøneset, so that I could get some wave pictures.
