Saturday: This was a day when anything could happen, weatherwise. Which is intriguing and so I drove to Nerlandsøya to do a round trip hike across Rjåhornet and Storevarden.
We headed out from Kvalsund…
Our journey up the forest was nice. The path was not too wet.
Once above the forest, we could enjoy blue sky…
…while expecting anything to happen…
And soon enough, things began to happen…
It’s fascinating to observe rain showers when it’s not raining on *me*
Eventually, we reached the top of Rjåhornet, and we were still dry. It was windy, so the hood came on.
After a short stay, we moved on in the direction of Storevarden.
Just before we got to Storevarden, we got a nasty hail shower combined with strong wind. Fortunately, there was a building we could find shelter behind.
After a few minutes, the shower moved on and we could head up to the top.
I was happy to witness that someone else was “getting it” now…
We could now enjoy the top of Storevarden in the clear…
OK, we had reached the top and the wise thing to do would be to hurry down the normal route while we were “ahead”.
But we hadn’t done any off-trail yet. And I hadn’t gotten any new GPS tracks either…
So, we followed the northeast ridge for a little while. There was a path here, but I had no idea where it was going.
I considered descending into Kalddalen but wasn’t quite sure if we would be able to reach the road below. Besides, the terrain didn’t really look too inviting.
But the view towards the other islands was excellent!
In the absence of more rain showers, we both had a wonderful time!
We even got a rainbow…
Eventually, I decided to aim for the road to Teigetua and return to Kvalsund.
It had been a great hike. I was really happy that I took the trip to this island today.
With all this weather going around, it was amazing that we got away with just a couple of minutes of hail…
