Stedjeåsen (624m), Oct 3 2023

Our route

Tuesday: My last day in Sogndal this time started with a morning walk with Karma down in Sogndalsfjøra.

Sogndalsfjøra, early morning

After work, and after rain, we headed into the Stedjeåsen forest.

A nice start to the hike…

The goal for today was to visit a part of the forest that I hadn’t been to before. Which meant that it could get steep. Someone is marking a lot of previously unmarked paths in this forest, and we followed a path we seldom hike in order to get to the more rugged parts of the forest.

Heading into unknown territory…

After a while, we reached new terrain. It wasn’t that steep, but oh – how cumbersome. Fallen trees, slippery moss and treacherous ground.

We love this kind of terrain, don’t we?

Eventually, we stumbled on a marked path that I didn’t know existed – the yellow route in center on the picture below. I could not understand how this path would connect to the established trail system in this forest, and when the path began to descend, I concluded that it didn’t.

Never been here before…

Our route – the yellow one. Eventually, we turned around when it descended. Don’t know where it was going

So, we went back up again and then got into really steep terrain before we finally got back on the forest path.

We passed one of the few viewpoints in this forest…

Sogndalsfjorden view

…before reaching the mailbox.

At the mailbox

The mailbox isn’t the high point in the forest, but going over there would mean crossing a super-wet meadow. I wasn’t interested. We had passed a point just 1m lower than the high point, so in terms of elevation, we were OK…

From the mailbox, we followed a newly marked forest path.

Following a ridge path

And after a little while, we passed our second viewpoint on our hike.

Hesteggi view

Then we descended in my favorite part of the forest, which I call the green-green part.

Super-nice!

Ytrehornsnakken (554m), Oct 4 2023

Our route

Wednesday: After work, I drove from Sogndal and back home, only stopping in Hornindal to walk the dog up and down Ytrehornsnakken.

Ytrehornsnakken

We didn’t have a whole lot of daylight left, so we hiked quite fast.

Passing “Dagsturhytta”

This is a very nice route, and my kind of route – straight up!

Steady progress up the forest

30 minutes later (OK, the elapsed time gets worse every year) we reached the top.

On top of Ytrehornsnakken

It was very tempting to continue up the ridge, but that would mean total darkness on our way down. Which was not really an option, as I hadn’t brought a headlamp.

The ridge goes on

We enjoyed the nice view before returning to the car…

Aksla (188m), Oct 5 2023

Our route

Thursday: Ålesund day, and after work I would be going to dinner with my boss – flying in from eastern Norway) and a colleague.

I ended work 4pm and as the dinner was 6pm, I had 2 hours to walk the dog, get changed, drive to Ålesund, find parking and get to the restaurant. I figured there was enough time to do the normal round across Aksla.

We took it fairly easy from Gangstøvika, but halfway to Fjellstua, I realized that I didn’t have plenty of time. So, I started jogging.

We need to speed up…

To my surprise, they had started to charge money for access to the Fjellstua balcony. That’s outrageous! Hell if I wanted to pay anything, and so my Ålesund picture was taken further up the road. It’s not the same. Not even close, but I have enough pictures of Ålesund from Fjellstua…

Grrr….

I had to jog all the way back to Gangstøvika, only stopping for a minute at Rundskue, where Karma would get her treats.

At Rundskue – the Aksla high point

It was a good thing I was driving, hence not drinking. Because just one beer after that run would have done me no good…

Rambjøra (132m), Oct 6 2023

Our route

Friday: Short story: I took the brush cutter and went to the Rambjøra forest – in the rain – to do some more good…

A good activity when it is raining…

Rambjøra (132m), Oct 7 2023

The route

Saturday: After the hike to Rjåhornet and Storevarden on Nerlandsøya, I went into the Rambjøra forest with miscellaneous tools to sort out some of the trail’s “wet problems”.

At work in the Rambjøra forest

The good thing about rain is the trail tells you where it needs help…

Anything helps…

That was all the trail maintenance for this week.

Melshornet (809m), Oct 8 2023

Our route

Sunday: Today, I chose to hike Melshornet on the Ørsta/Volda border. This would be the first time in the new winter season that I would touch fresh snow.

Melshornet

This hike started out nice and autumn-ish.

So far, so good…

We headed out from Bratteberg and once we reached the Reset road, we went off-trail into the forest.

Off-trail in the forest

I love this type of forest. I could have spent all day in it. But I also love mountain tops. A tad more…

Off-trail in the forest

Reaching snow already on our hike up to Sandhornet was a bit of a shock, even if I’d seen snow all around all week. But it’s different to actually be in it.

Wow – this was early…

Approaching Sandhornet

The winter feeling persisted when we sat course for Grøthornet.

Towards Grøthornet

The contrasts between autumn and winter were stunning.

Winter is coming…

It didn’t take long for Karma to enjoy the snow to the fullest…

Having a good time?

The weather was “gloomy”. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got snowfall on Melshornet.

Gloomy…

But so far, we were in “the clear”…

Melshornet ahead

It was that kind of day when color pictures looked like black and white

This picture is NOT desaturated…

And – it was snowing on top of Melshornet…

Kinda brutal…

We weren’t alone up here. A girl was leaving the top when we arrived. When we headed down, we soon caught up with her, even if she moved swiftly. Age isn’t always a downside. Years of experience from slippery slopes also count…

Heading down from Melshornet

After a while, we were back in the autumn and I decided to hike down the new bike route – totally making sure we didn’t have any bikers behind us.

On top of the new biking route

A good hike!
