Sunday: After the nice hike to Koppefjellet in Volda the day before, I decided to drive to Ørsta today and hike Grøthornet above Liadalen.
I would typically drive to the end of the road before starting the hike to Liadalsætra and subsequently – up the mountain. But in the recent years, the road has been so bad that I have been avoiding going here. But I figured the car would probably survive one more drive up the gravel road.
When I got to Halse, I talked to a couple who told me that the road was now in a good standard. That was great news, but then they told me there’s hunting going on. For those who read my last report – I asked, “right now?” – No – after dark, they replied.
Their “get lost” strategy failed, and I continued driving to the end of the road.
From road end, we went hiking in the direction of Liadalssætra.
From Liadalssætra, there is a path but only the locals know where it is. Which meant that Karma and I had to try our luck off-trail.
The off-trail route is quite strenuous, but the upside is that it’s good exercise…
To make the hike a little bit easier, I aimed for a boulder field.
We do like boulder…
It wasn’t easy to tell how high we were at any given time, but Liahornet (1035m) gave us a good indication…
We had great views along the way to the top…
We reached a little bit of snow before we arriving on the top. The summit is a bit narrow, so I always put Karma on a leash here…
This was my 4th hike to this top, and I can say for sure as the hillside gets tougher every time. But we’re still able to reach the top, so no complaints!
From the top, we could enjoy familiar views in all directions…
After treats and a round of pictures, it was time to head back down and to my surprise, I could do a whole lot of sliding on snow. Great fun!
Back in the Skåla valley I noticed a marked path that I couldn’t remember seeing before. It took us down to Liadalssætra along a different route that we would normally take, but without a clear benefit. I don’t think I will spend time looking for it the next time I’m up here.
It was a short, but very nice hike.
Back in the car, I stopped for a picture of Liadalsnipa – a mountain I know quite well, but I’m not sure if I will ever hike it again. The route up the north ridge (on the below picture) is getting more challenging every year and the safety margins are long gone. Which is exactly why I think I will be going back up there…
Trip statistics: 6,2km, 870 vertical meters, 2h:31m
