“Stegasteiner”, Trælvikosen, July 16 2024
Tuesday: This installation (architected by Snøhetta) came to life in 2022 and is a popular attraction outside Brønnøysund. We went to check it our together with my mom, before our hike to Tilremshatten.
The installation is about time, about the changes in nature and about embracing a sense of wonder.
We were not there at the optimal time of the day, when the sea level just covers the steps and it looks like you walk on water.
Nevertheless, big fun!
Tilremshatten (316m), July 16 2024
Tuesday: After visiting “Stegasteiner”, we drove to Skarsåsen to hike Tilremshatten. I had an appointment at the Vet at 2pm (Karma’s monthly Librela injection) so we could not to a longer day hike. Besides, I was on on-call duty and couldn’t go “off the grid” anyway…
This is mom’s regular hike and she’s been up to Tilremshatten more than 2000 times.
Anne and I hadn’t been there since 2007 and a revisit was overdue. And Karma would get a new top today!
I do enjoy this hike. It begins with slabs and continues across rugged terrain until it ends as a forest top.
There are indeed dramatic details along the way!
If I had lived in Brønnøysund, I would have spent a lot of time examining the east side of this ridge.
At times, this ridge feels a bit “endless”
But eventually, we were up…
The point where 99,9% turn around is between 314 and 315 meters. The high point (318,6m) is located 100m north of the south top. There is a super-vague path leading there and mom and Anne were NOT interested. I could have brought Karma but it was already hot enough for her, and so I went there by myself.
On our way down, we did a variation of the route and Karma found water. It was a super-hot day.

We were so lucky about having nice weather (close to a heatwave) in northern Norway while it was pouring rain in the south of Norway.
Mom wanted to hike back to the house via a different route and so we parted.

Mosaksla (526m), July 16 2024
Tuesday: After the hike to Tilremshatten, I took the dog to the Vet for the monthly Librela injection. I had to get my regular Veterinarian to email the prescription to a pharmacy in Brønnøysund. Then I had to get the medication before the appointment with the Vet in Brønnøysund.
The queue at the pharmacy was “endless”. I had 10 people ahead of me and my Vet appointment was at risk. I had to think of something clever and went over to the non-prescription desk and said “I think there is a prescription awaiting, but I am not sure if I am at the right pharmacy“. Which was like … 3% true.
The girl said she would check and then she waved me into a different room. I got the prescription right away and I could feel hateful looks from the people waiting in line.
After Karma got her injection at the Veterinarian, I went back to Anne and asked if she was up for a 2nd hike. She wasn’t and so I decided to hike Mosaksla alone.
I was keen on doing a repetition of a route I’ve done a couple of times before – take the normal route up to the ridge, but then cross Storfjelldalen valley and hike up the northeast ridge.
Storfjelldalen offers cumbersome terrain, but I knew what was awaiting.
The terrain is cumbersome in the sense that you constantly have to look for the best way to get from one rock to another…
Today, I was in a real scrambling mode and decided to a) scramble as much as I possibly could, and b) scramble hard!
Scramble “hard” means there is a certain risk element. In case I didn’t do everything right, there was a chance that I might not be coming home. Which sounds stupid to most people, but it’s something I cannot get rid of.
Of course, I assess the walls I scramble (or climb). I have to be 100% sure there are grips when I am topping out. If I am not sure, I don’t do it.
After climbing the first section with massive exposure, I was all fired up and took the most difficult routes possible (that I could master) and had BIG FUN!
I really like this mountain. It’s so rugged and the opportunities for “creative activities” are numerous.
The summit was not far away now…
Eventually, I reached the top and I was alone on this mountain.
I took the normal route down – which was somewhat boring to me, yet knowing it’s a challenge to some.
Another good day in Brønnøysund!
