Sollia (661m), Apr 15 2024
Monday: I was sick and tired of the neck problem I’ve had for the past 4 days and today I decided to do something about it. I called a chiropractor that had solved a big problem for me some years ago, and he was able to see me today.
In short, my gym exercises the other day had caused a whiplash-like condition in my neck – but without the collision, the force involved and any other form of comparison whatsoever. He gave me what he figured to be the best treatment and asked me to come back 4 days later.
After work, Anne went to Lundeura on Runde to do “park rangering stuff” while I decided to do a walk around Øyradalen (Øyrahornet – Slettheia – Selsteinen – Storehanen – Rysseviktua – Sandvihornet).
I headed out from Tjørvåg, aiming for Øyrahornet with a really stiff neck. I could hardly move it, but at least I didn’t have a headache.
On our way to Øyrahornet, we always stop by the bench…
From Øyrahornet, we sat course for Slettheia.
But on our way up Slettheia, the snow on Sollia looked so tempting. I decided to change my plan and go to Sollia instead!
Karma seemed to appreciate that decision…
Rather than following the ridges, I aimed for a short-cut above lake Kjerringvatnet.
I don’t walk here a lot, so it was a nice deviation from the normal routes.
At some point, the snow was so hard that I didn’t have the guts to continue upwards. If I fell, the slide would be nasty. Karma – with natural crampons – would just have to wait until I found a safe route.
Soon after, we reached the western top on Sollia – only a couple of centimetres lower than the eastern top.
The views are equally good!
Then we went over to the eastern top and took a selfie…
We had a good view toward Runde, where Anne was working this afternoon.
Karma’s hot spot on the tail was very impractical. It was hard to find the balance between fixing the bandage firmly, versus how Karma would feel it.
For descent, we sat the course in the direction of Nonshornet.
We followed the Nonshornet trail down to the main road, 1,4km away from the car.
My neck was so stiff that I decided to take a pain killer to relax the muscles. I felt better already minutes later and when I went to bed this evening, I felt that magic had struck. I felt 90% better already! Because of the chiropractor of course and not the pain killers…

Kongsvollen (683m), Apr 16 2024
Tuesday: I hadn’t done Kongsvollen’s north ridge so far in 2024, and it was time to do something about it.
The transport leg across the flats isn’t the highlight of the trip. But the upside was that my neck was feeling “just as good as new”. I sent my chiropractor some warm thoughts…
It helps massively to reach the ridge and get some proper views.
I am really fond of the north ridge route…
Today, Karma seemed to share my enthusiasm…
It was time for the steepest part – “Bukketrappa” (Goat stairs)
But first, Karma had to stretch a little, so she was ready for the ropes…
…and then the climb was on!
After the first steeper section, we had a short transport leg to the steepest section.
Karma – turning 12 this year – still has some spice in her moves…
It is a beautiful ridge!
And then we were up!
It was tempting to include Blåtind (697m) on this hike, but it was getting late as it was, and I was hungry.
We took a steep off-trail route from the ridge – and this particular variation was the first time we did.
Eventually, we found the path on the south side of lake Løsetvatnet and followed it back to the trailhead.

Nystøylhornet (600m), Apr 17 2024
Wednesday: At least once a year I have to take the trip across the fjord to hike Nystøylhornet.
The ascent route is always the same, but I try to vary the descent routes – all off-trail, of course!
I hate the very first part but love the rest!
On my way up, I get the “big mountain” feeling although this mountain is lower than my local tops.
It was a little chilly and steam was coming out of the dog…
Eventually, we reached the final hillside.
Karma was still smokin’ hot…
And then we were up!
This is a good place to view my local island – Gurskøya – from.
The view towards Sandsøya and Voksa ain’t bad either…
Or Kvamsøya, for that matter…
In addition to the nice ascent route, I like Nystøylhornet for the views – in general!
It was time to figure out the descent route. I hadn’t been to Arsetvarden before – a small hump below Dalevarden, but I didn’t think I had the time if I wanted to catch the ferry I had planned to catch. But at least, we would head in that direction and break off when I felt I was on the clock.
After a while, I didn’t think there was time to visit Arsetvarden (although it probably was) and we took an off-trail route, aiming to join our ascent route as far down as possible.
I had been descending here earlier, but definitely not this particular route. As such, I would get a new track on my GPS map.
It was a most enjoyable round-trip hike!

Melshornet (809m), Apr 18 2024
Thursday: After work, I felt for hiking Melshornet on the Ørsta/Volda border. I didn’t give bringing my skis a single thought. And no alarms went off when we left Helgatun.
The plan was to follow the path to a cabin in the forest, then move on towards Melssætra. But there were dogs, barking as crazy by the cabin and so I abandoned that route. Instead, I found a path I didn’t know about, parallel to the regular skiing route.
Once this route led me to the skiing route, I chose to go off-trail until we reached the path from Melssætra.
There were patches of snow, but no alarms were sounding. It was a hike with some snow involved. That’s all.
A hike with some really good views…
Familiar mountains all around…
I love snow as much as the next guy, but Karma turns it up to 17!
As we approached the top of Melshornet, I could see that there was actually quite a bit of snow left on the mountain!
We reached the top of Melshornet and Karma’s tail was still in bad shape…
But there wasn’t much I could do about that now. It was just a matter of following the cleaning twice per day procedure and hope she would get better soon.
There was no reason to pack the skis away just yet. Plenty options all around…
I decided to return via Grøthornet and now the alarms were going off. Why the heck didn’t I bring my skis? The snow was just perfect!
Even from Grøthornet, there was a whole world of snow ahead of us!
I decided to see if I could follow snow all the way down to the trailhead.
When we joined the regular skiing route, there were patches without snow. But die-hard skiers would just pretend there was snow and keep on going.
If it hadn’t been for that we were heading for Sogndal the next day, I would have come back with skis the very next day!

Rambjøra (132m), Apr 19 2024
Friday: As the afternoon would be spent in a car between Ytre Søre Sunnmøre and Sogndal, I chose to give Karma a walk up to Rambjøra before we got into the car.
It wasn’t much of a walk, but at least it was a walk. Better than nothing at all…
