Feb 5 2018, Stedjeåsen

Monday afternoon; “home office” in Sogndal, but had time for a quick hike to Stedjeåsen before driving home to Sunnmøre. I can always rely on a good trail up the forest, no matter how deep the snow is…
Feb 6 2018, Rjåhornet

Tuesday afternooon; nice round trip hike across Rjåhornet. This was the only day on Sunnmøre this week, without rough weather of some kind…
Feb 7 2018, Solavågsfjellet

Wednesday; I should have known better that to go to a forest top I didn’t remember anything from, just after a big snowfall. No paths were visible, of course, and there are no paths on the map either. Thanks to the GPS, I found the top, and the descent was a race against darkness to avoid standing on top of cliffs, not seeing anything below…
Feb 8 2018, Storhornet

Thursday; my 2nd day in the Ålesund office this week, and I was in mood for a hike, not a ski-trip. The place with least snow would be Godøya island. I had forgotten about the tunnel work and had to wait 15 minutes for the convoy. Meanwhile, daylight is fading.
The path to Storhornet is excellent and I tried to make up for lost time (waiting for the convoy) With darkness on its way and quite a long drive home, I dropped the idea of a round trip hike.
Feb 9 2018, Øyrahornet

Friday; a shitty weather day. Good thing I only had time to hike Øyrahornet, as I had to get the house in order before Anne came up for the weekend.
I did a round trip hike and the descent route (which I’ve done twice during summer) was quite challenging with snow. I had to guide the dog from ledge to ledge in the steepest section. But, we made it down, safe and sound, this time as well…
Feb 10 2018, Melshornet

Saturday; I wanted to take Anne on a ski-trip to Koppefjellet (940m) in Volda. But the actual weather didn’t look anything like the forecast. None of us wanted to go skiing in steep terrain with such low visibility, so we decided to go for an easy ski-trip to Melshornet instead. There are tracks from start to finish, and visibility is not so much of an issue here.
The wind was quite strong on top and everyone is in a hurry to change and get ready for the descent. But once ready, it is all worth while. Karma and I raced down the mountain as fast as we could, and Anne had to take it easy, wth bad knees. A very fun descent, and my 3rd ski-trip to Melshornet in 2018…
Feb 10 2018, Høgåsen

Saturday afternoon; I took Karma for a round trip hike across Stemnehornet (190m), Svarane (191m) and Høgåsen (240m) on Dimna island. There wasn’t a lot of snow. This winter has been just crazy; snowfall, snowmelt, snowfall, …
Feb 11 2018, Haddalshornet

Sunday; another bad weather day, with wind and snow from the east. I tried to be clever and chose Haddalshornet as my goal. I would be in shelter down in the forest, and once above the forest, I would stay on the west side of the ridges, hoping to be sheltered from the wind.
The plan actually worked. But the combination of snowfall and strong wind made me choose a different descent route – quite steep at first, but much more sheltered from the weather. And despite the weather, this was actually a nice hike.
